Dharamshala: Tea Fields

The consumption and cultivation of tea have played a vital role in Indian tradition for centuries. On average, India alone produces 900,000 tons of tea each year, making it one of the world’s largest producers. The mountainous region around the city of Dharamshala provides the ideal environmental conditions for tea cultivation. Tea growth thrives as a result of the adequate rainfall, temperature, sufficient water drainage and fertile soil found in the region. The majority of tea fields located on the outskirts of Dharamshala sit at an average of 1,380 feet (420 m) above sea level. This particular elevation helps produce a unique and flavorful product. However, tea is also cultivated at other altitudes. Compared to other plantations around India, Dharamshala is considerably smaller in size. Dharamshala grows a variety of teas, including green, black, herbal, jasmine and Oolong.
