Punjab, In and Around Amritsar

Amritsar, the second latest urban area in Punjab, is home to the Harmandir Sahib, the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. Approximately 75% of the world’s Sikh population lives in Punjab where the religion originated during the 15th century.

Punjab, a word compounded from the Persian words panj (five) and āb (waters), represents “the land of five rivers” – Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jehlum – of this North Indian state. One of the most fertile regions in India, Punjab is ideal for wheat growing and is referred to as “India’s bread-basket.”
