Santa Marija Caves

Santa Marija Caves form a network of shallow caverns, arches, and swim-throughs along Comino’s limestone coast. The principal cavern has an entrance at approximately 8 meters (26 feet) and opens through the rock wall, allowing sunlight to illuminate the interior with reflected blue light. Surrounding passages, boulders, crevices, and rocky ledges support Mediterranean reef life, including seabream, damselfish, moray eels, octopuses, and nudibranchs. The caves are part of Comino’s broader karst landscape, created as waves and weathering exploited fractures within Upper Coralline Limestone. Their relatively shallow depth and naturally illuminated passages make the site particularly suited to underwater observation and photography.

Fun Fact: Divers can enter the principal cavern through an opening about 8 meters deep and emerge through another side of the limestone wall, effectively swimming beneath part of Comino’s coastline.
