Roughback Batfish

November 2007

Escambrón Marine Park, also known as La Poza del Escambrón, is a shallow shore-diving site on San Juan’s Atlantic coast. An offshore reef and constructed breakwaters shelter parts of the cove, creating comparatively calm conditions suitable for new divers and underwater photography. The sandy bottom, rock formations, seagrass, and reef habitat support Caribbean reef fish and occasional green sea turtles. Its urban setting is unusual: divers enter the water only minutes from Old San Juan, beside a coastline shaped by centuries of military defense. The nearby Batería del Escambrón formed part of the fortified outer lines that protected the eastern approach to the Spanish colonial city.

Fun Fact: Escambrón is entered directly from a sandy urban beach, allowing divers to explore a reef habitat within minutes of Old San Juan rather than travelling by boat to an offshore site.
