My First Night Dive

Grand Cayman combines shallow coral reefs, dramatic wall dives, historic wrecks, and clear Caribbean water. The island rises from the Cayman Ridge beside the Cayman Trench, which reaches approximately 7,686 meters below sea level; beyond the narrow reef shelf, underwater terrain descends steeply into deep water. Dive sites around the west, north, and south coasts include coral gardens, swim-throughs, drop-offs, and the intentionally sunk former submarine-rescue vessel USS Kittiwake. North Sound contains protected reefs and the well-known Stingray City dive site. Grand Cayman’s marine environment is managed through a network of marine parks, while reef-monitoring programs document continuing pressures from warming seas, coral disease, and other environmental changes.

Fun Fact: Stingray City originated when fishers cleaned their catches in Grand Cayman’s sheltered North Sound. Wild southern stingrays learned to gather for the discarded scraps, creating one of the world’s best-known underwater wildlife encounters.
