My First Ocean Dive

Margarita Island lies in the southern Caribbean Sea within Venezuela’s island state of Nueva Esparta. Diving around the island and nearby rocky islets includes coral communities, sandy seabeds, submerged structures, and hard-bottom habitats supporting reef fish, sponges, rays, and other marine life. Seasonal coastal upwelling brings cooler, nutrient-rich water into the region, increasing marine productivity while sometimes reducing visibility. These waters also have a long maritime history connected to fishing and the colonial pearl industry centered on nearby Cubagua Island. Sites around Margarita and the Los Frailes Archipelago therefore combine varied underwater terrain, biologically productive waters, and historical connections to one of the earliest intensive marine industries in the Americas.

Fun Fact: Nearby Los Frailes Archipelago is an important reproductive area for the threatened spotted eagle ray, a species recognizable by its spotted upper surface and elongated, wing-like pectoral fins.
