My First South Pacific Dive

Nadi, on the western coast of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, provides boat access to coral reefs within the sheltered Mamanuca Lagoon and along its outer barrier. Lagoon sites generally feature calm water, coral bommies, and accessible conditions, while channels and ocean-facing reefs introduce stronger currents, walls, and encounters with reef sharks, rays, turtles, and schooling fish. The Mamanuca reefs form the southwestern end of the Great Sea Reef–Yasawa–Mamanuca system, an extensive chain of interconnected reef habitats. Nadi’s importance as Fiji’s principal international gateway has also made this region one of the country’s most accessible diving areas, allowing divers to explore varied reef environments without travelling to Fiji’s more remote islands.

Fun Fact: Researchers have documented eight shark species at Fiji’s Shark Reef Marine Reserve, including bull, tiger, silvertip, sicklefin lemon, and several reef shark species.
