Humphead Wrasse

Pemba Island, the northernmost major island of Tanzania’s Zanzibar Archipelago, is bordered by coral reefs, steep walls, and channels influenced by strong ocean currents. Along its western side, the approximately 800-metre-deep Pemba Channel separates the island from mainland Tanzania and connects directly with the open Indian Ocean. Diving conditions vary considerably among sites, from sheltered coral formations to exposed walls and current-swept reefs. Scientific surveys have found substantial differences in coral cover and fish abundance across the island, reflecting both locally healthy reef areas and sites affected by fishing pressure and earlier coral loss. Mangroves, seagrass beds, sandy habitats, and coral reefs together support the broader marine ecosystem surrounding Pemba.

Fun Fact: Scientists have documented localized upwelling along western Pemba during the southeast monsoon, when nutrient-rich water rises from depths of at least 80–100 meters toward the surface.
