Ceschetto: A Hill Hamlet of Sessa Aurunca

Photographed in 2015, Ceschetto is a small frazione of Sessa Aurunca in the Province of Caserta, Campania. The settlement lies at approximately 1,611 feet (491 meters) above sea level on the western slope of the Roccamonfina volcanic massif.

The wider area formed part of historic Terra di Lavoro, a regional and administrative name used since the Middle Ages for a territory extending beyond the boundaries of the modern Province of Caserta.

Ceschetto’s narrow lanes pass stone-and-plaster houses, arched entrances, timber doors, tiled roofs, small churches, courtyards, and cultivated plots. The varied masonry, plasterwork, repairs, and additions document successive adaptation within a rural settlement rather than a single formal architectural program.

Grapevines and sweet chestnut trees grow around the settlement. Both are established elements of the Roccamonfina uplands. The 2015 photographs provide a record of the relationship between vernacular buildings, agricultural land use, and the surrounding hill landscape.
