Photographed in Groningen in 2004, these cultivated gerberas were displayed as cut flowers. Groningen is the capital of the province of the same name in the northern Netherlands. The earliest known document naming the city is a charter dated 1040.
Gerberas belong to the daisy family, Asteraceae. The genus Gerbera is native across parts of Africa and Asia. The southern African species Gerbera jamesonii became an important parent of many modern ornamental hybrids, which are bred in single, semi-double, and double forms and in colors ranging from white and yellow to orange, red, pink, and purple.
The Netherlands is a major center of greenhouse floriculture and flower distribution. Dutch growers cultivate gerberas year-round, supported by specialized auction, packing, and logistics systems.
