The Three Towers of Mount Titano

The City of San Marino is crowned by Guaita, Cesta and Montale, three medieval fortifications positioned along the summits of Mount Titano. Together with the historic centre, they form part of the San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano UNESCO World Heritage property, inscribed in 2008 for its evidence of the republic’s continuous civic autonomy since the Middle Ages.

Guaita, the First Tower, is the oldest. It is believed to have served as a refuge around the year 1000 and was enlarged and restored during later centuries. Two defensive walls enclose military structures, a well, the Chapel of Santa Barbara, a bell tower and the main keep. The fortress also served as a prison until 1975.

Cesta, also known as Fratta, is the Second Tower. It dates to the 13th century and is recorded in a document from 1253. Standing on Mount Titano’s highest spur at 755 metres (2,477 feet), it formerly housed guards and prison cells. Since 1956, it has contained the Museum of Ancient Weapons.

Montale, the Third Tower, is the smallest and most isolated. Its position beyond the old city made it an important lookout within the defensive system. Inside is an eight-metre-deep prison chamber historically known as the “bottom of the tower.” Montale can be viewed only from the exterior.

Although medieval in origin, the towers and historic centre underwent substantial restoration and reconstruction from the late 19th through the early 20th century. UNESCO recognizes these interventions as part of the site’s conservation history.
