Vaduz Castle: Residence of Liechtenstein’s Princely Family

Vaduz Castle stands approximately 394 feet (120 meters) above Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein. The castle remains the private residence of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein and is not open to the public.
The castle’s origins probably date to the 12th century. Its residential tower has been dated to 1287, and the castle was first documented in writing in 1322. It passed to the House of Liechtenstein in 1712, when Prince Johann Adam Andreas I acquired the County of Vaduz.
After falling into disrepair, the castle was extensively restored between 1905 and 1912. Prince Franz Josef II later enlarged and modernized the complex, and the princely family established its permanent residence there in 1939.
