Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve, Edisto Island

On the northeastern coast of Edisto Island, Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Management Area protects maritime forest, salt marsh, freshwater and brackish ponds, managed agricultural fields, and an eroding barrier-island beach. The property incorporates the former Bleak Hall and Sea Cloud plantations. It opened to the public under South Carolina Department of Natural Resources management in 2008 and forms part of the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The plantation landscape was built and cultivated through the labor of enslaved Africans and African Americans. Sea Cloud produced rice, livestock, and Sea Island cotton before John F. Townsend combined it with Bleak Hall during the 1850s. Three nineteenth-century structures survive at Bleak Hall: a barn, a multipurpose ice house, and a gardener’s shed. Each incorporates tabby, a regional building material made from oyster shell, lime, and sand. The structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and the ice house and gardener’s shed display Gothic Revival design.

At Botany Bay’s “boneyard” beach, shoreline retreat has left dead trees standing or fallen within the intertidal zone. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources identifies this as one of the state’s most rapidly eroding coastal sites. Erosion also threatens Indigenous shell-ring sites on Pockoy Island. More than 230 bird species have been documented across the preserve, which is managed for wildlife, scientific research, and the protection of cultural resources.
