Tiled Tombs of Pointe-Noire Cemetery

December 2017

The cemetery in Pointe-Noire, on the western coast of Basse-Terre, adjoins the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. Narrow lanes pass between concrete tombs and above-ground burial vaults, many faced with ceramic tiles arranged in checkerboards, geometric patterns, floral designs, and vivid colors. Crosses, name plaques, flowers, and metal grilles personalize the memorials and reflect Christian funerary traditions.

Tiled concrete vaults are found in several cemeteries across Guadeloupe. The Pointe-Noire cemetery displays considerable variation, with black-and-white grids beside orange, blue, green, gold, and multicolored compositions. The different materials and designs create individualized memorials within a broader regional funerary tradition.

Cemeteries throughout Guadeloupe become important places of family remembrance during the observances of 1 and 2 November. Graves are cleaned and decorated, and many cemeteries are illuminated with candles in honor of the dead.
