Khecheopalri Lake: A Sacred Wetland of Sikkim

Khecheopalri Lake lies near Khecheopalri village in Gyalshing District, western Sikkim, in northeastern India. The lake is known through several spellings and traditional names. Kha-Chot-Palri is commonly rendered in English as “the heaven of Padmasambhava,” while Sho Dzo Sho is often translated as “Oh Lady, Sit Here.” Government and international wetland records use the spelling Khachoedpalri for the wider wetland. Situated at approximately 5,600 feet (1,700 meters), the lake forms part of the sacred Sikkimese landscape known as Demazong, often translated as the “Valley of Rice.”

The lake is revered within Buddhist and Hindu traditions, while local Lepcha traditions also form part of its cultural history. Devotees commonly describe it as a wish-fulfilling lake. Interpretations of its footprint-like form vary among religious traditions, with associations including the Buddhist figure Tara, the Buddha, and the Hindu deity Shiva. Khecheopalri also belongs to a wider pilgrimage landscape that includes Dubdi, Pemayangtse, Sanga Choeling, and Tashiding monasteries.

One of the lake’s best-known legends holds that birds remove leaves and twigs that fall onto the water, preserving its sacred purity. This is a local belief rather than a documented natural phenomenon. Prayer flags, prayer wheels, offerings, and religious ceremonies reflect the continuing spiritual importance of the site. Fishing, swimming, boating, and other recreational activities are restricted to protect both the lake and its sacred character.

The lake is surrounded by a larger wetland and forest ecosystem. The 172-hectare Khachoedpalri Wetland was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance on July 15, 2024, becoming Sikkim’s first Ramsar Site. Conservation of the wetland involves government agencies, local communities, religious representatives, and conservation organizations.
