Licking a front paw, a lioness lies on a raised timber deck

Out of Africa Wildlife Park & Sanctuary

September 2013

Out of Africa Wildlife Park was founded in Fountain Hills, Arizona, in 1988 by Dean and Prayeri Harrison. It later moved to a 104-acre property in Camp Verde, where the present park opened to the public in May 2005. Its safari-style grounds and separate habitats contain exotic mammals, birds and reptiles from several regions of the world.

These photographs, taken in 2013, document zebras, ostriches, gemsbok, a giraffe, prairie dogs, lions and white-coated tigers. White tigers are not a separate species or subspecies; the pale coat is an inherited color variation within the tiger species.

Current Context

Some animals at the park were rescued or rehomed, while others were born in captivity or transferred from other zoological facilities. By 2025, a separate nonprofit, Out of Africa Wildlife Sanctuary Inc., was operating on the property to support lifelong animal care, habitat improvements, veterinary and nutritional care, and conservation education. The organizations are now collectively known as Out of Africa Wildlife Park & Sanctuary.
