Orongo: Ceremonial Village of the Birdman Tradition

Orongo is a Rapa Nui ceremonial village built on the narrow rim of Rano Kau, between the volcano’s crater and cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Its 54 low, elliptical stone houses were used seasonally during ceremonies associated with the tangata manu, or birdman, tradition. Orongo is now protected within Rapa Nui National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the annual ceremony, each participating group selected a hopu manu to descend the cliffs, swim to the offshore islet of Motu Nui and await the first egg of the migratory manutara seabird. The successful swimmer returned the egg to his sponsor, who received the title of tangata manu and associated ritual authority for the following year. The tradition continued until the mid-19th century.

Orongo also contains one of Rapa Nui’s most important concentrations of rock art. Petroglyphs depict birdmen, manutara birds, komari fertility symbols and representations of the deity Makemake. Many are concentrated around the ceremonial precinct known as Mata Ngarau, where erosion continues to threaten exposed carvings.

The village’s stone structures deteriorated after the site ceased to be used. Archaeological teams led by William Mulloy investigated and restored the houses during projects conducted in 1974 and 1976. The surviving architecture, petroglyphs and surrounding landscape preserve evidence of a major transformation in Rapa Nui religious and political life.
