Shell Money Making in Langa Langa Lagoon

November 2006

Shell money remains an important part of cultural and economic life in Langa Langa Lagoon on the western coast of Malaita. Rather than functioning simply as a substitute for modern currency, it is used in customary marriage exchanges, compensation settlements, ceremonial displays, and transactions involving cash, goods, or services.

Langa Langa shell money is made from hundreds or thousands of small shell beads. Four locally named shells traditionally provide its principal colors: white kakadu, black kurila, red romu, and orange ke’e. By 2006, some raw shells were collected locally, while others were obtained through trade with communities elsewhere in the Solomon Islands.

The shells are broken into small pieces, perforated, heated when color enhancement is required, and ground against stone until the beads are smooth and relatively uniform. They are then threaded into prescribed arrangements. A prominent form, tafuliae, consists of ten strings patterned with red, white, and black beads.

The division of work has varied among families and over time. Diving and some polishing were historically associated mainly with men, while women performed much of the breaking, drilling, and stringing. Later research documented women also collecting shells and men participating throughout the production process, although women continued to undertake much of the beadmaking.

Shell-money production is closely connected to Langa Langa identity and remains an important livelihood. The same techniques are also used to produce necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and ceremonial ornaments, although commercial shell jewellery does not necessarily carry the customary meaning or value of formal shell money.
