Thimphu Centenary Farmers Market

Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital and largest city, was home to a busy weekend market on the west bank of the Wang Chhu. Photographed in December 2010, the Centenary Farmers Market brought together farmers, traders, residents, and visitors.
Vendors sold seasonal fruit and vegetables, spices, incense, dried fish, butter, cheese, and other agricultural goods. The market served as both a retail center and a social gathering place, linking rural producers with consumers in the capital. A nearby handicraft market offered textiles, religious objects, jewelry, baskets, and other crafts.
Current Context
The former Centenary Farmers Market was extensively renovated between 2022 and 2024 and renamed Kaja Throm. The upgraded complex was inaugurated on July 17, 2024. It contains 442 stalls, dry stores, cold-storage facilities, food stalls, a dairy stall, sanitation facilities, and designated areas for deliveries and waste management.
