Women’s Kastom Dance on Ambae
December 2006
Traditional songs and dances remain important forms of cultural expression in Vanuatu, with particular performances associated with community gatherings, ceremonies, and other customary occasions.
During this women’s kastom dance documented on Ambae in 2006, the performers wore patterned woven mats and seed-pod rattles tied around their ankles. Their steps caused the pods to strike together, adding percussion to the rhythm of the dance. The women also sang and used handheld wooden percussion instruments.
The performance combined movement, singing, woven ceremonial dress, and instruments made from locally available plant materials. Together, these elements preserve and transmit knowledge specific to the participating community.
