From June through July 2007, Amanda Fornal traveled with Justin Fornal and Raymond Pagnucco through Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Ghana to document traditional foods and recipes. The fieldwork included an overland journey from Monrovia, Liberia, to Freetown, Sierra Leone, recording culinary practices in communities along the route.
The resulting footage was presented in The Liberian, The Pepper and the Pestle, a documentary focused on Liberian palm butter, Aunty Nana, and Monrovia’s Water Street Market. The documentary aired in April 2009 on BronxNet Television and NYC Life Television.
Won best documentary in the NewYork Independent Film Festival.
