Kolkata Street Dogs

The Kolkata street dogs are an ancient canine race with a heritage that dates back thousands of years. Once the loyal companions of the aboriginal peoples of India, these animals now freely roam the streets of urban towns and cities. Also known as the “Pariah Dog,” this species is a prime example of the original domestic dog. These animals exhibit physical characteristics that are identical to those canines whose fossil remains have been discovered in other parts of the world. Although once domesticated, these animals are highly territorial and are often found guarding stretches of road against other canines. Street dogs are social but incredibly cautious. It is not an uncommon for people to train these animals as pets. They require extensive socialization as puppies but make an excellent companion for children or a family.
