- Love is…
Throughout history and cross-culturally love has been defined in a myriad of ways. What is the true meaning of love? How is love valued by people and why? Is romantic love valued more than maternal love by some and sibling love valued more than friendship by others? What dictates these values? Do we define love due to culture and social conventions, generation, access to media or biology and a cocktail of oxytocin, vasopressin and dopamine? The language we speak, the people we interact with and the cultural norms we learn all effect the way we view love. Whether it’s the love a mother feels for her child, the love one feels for their pet or the undying romantic love of a star-crossed pair, they each have a history and a narrative.
Love is… is a multifaceted global project that aims to capture a world view of love. During the past year, Amanda interviewed 612 people from over 70 countries. Interviewees discussed how they define love, what love they value the most and why. Love is a catalyst for stories of all types, from terrifying to inspirational. The data I have collected will be presented in a documentary film as well as a book.
