Great Islay Swim

Traveled to Islay, Scotland as a part of the Expedition Team for the Great Islay Swim. In August 2017, fellow Explorers Club members Justin Fornal and Chad Anderson, along with Johnnie Mundell, became the first people in history to swim around the island. Following in the footsteps of the late Alfred Barnard, we stopped by each of the eight operating distilleries and built upon Alfred’s written account with video, photographs and scientific exploration. Alfred Barnard who, in the late 1880’s, made an epic journey with friends visiting all the working distilleries of Islay, detailed the distilleries of that era in his book, “The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom”.
The Expedition Team also carried a 30-gallon oak cask that was filled incrementally at all of Islay’s active whisky distilleries. Bottles of this ‘pillage cask’ will be available through Single Cask Nation. A portion of proceeds will go to Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
