Machu Picchu and the Classic Inca Trail

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on an Andean ridge approximately 7,970 feet (2,430 meters) above sea level, northwest of Cusco, Peru. The archaeological complex lies within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, a protected cultural and natural landscape extending from high mountain environments into tropical montane forest.

The Classic Inca Trail follows approximately 27 miles (43 kilometers) of stone paths, mountain passes and cloud forest. Usually completed over four days, the route passes several Inca archaeological sites before reaching Intipunku, the Sun Gate, overlooking Machu Picchu. It forms part of a much larger network of Inca roads that once connected communities and administrative centres across the Andes.

Machu Picchu includes ceremonial, residential and agricultural areas constructed through highly adapted engineering. Its fitted stone walls, stairways, water channels and terraces were integrated into steep and geologically complex terrain. The terraces provided cultivation space while also contributing to drainage, erosion control and slope stability.

The site was known to local residents before the arrival of Yale historian Hiram Bingham in 1911. Bingham’s expeditions brought Machu Picchu to broad international attention, although describing him as its “discoverer” disregards this earlier local knowledge.

Peru established the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu in 1981. UNESCO inscribed it as a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site in 1983, recognizing both its Inca architecture and its biologically diverse mountain-forest setting.
