Belfast: Street Art

The capital city of Northern Ireland, Belfast, has many new artists showcasing their art throughout the streets of the city. Since 2013, the city holds the annual Hit the North Street Art Festival, which brings local and international artists to the city. Due to its success, the Cathedral Quarter has become an additional attraction in Belfast. This walkable neighborhood showcases over a hundred pieces of street art from artists worldwide. Most of the art in this area promote pop culture combined with historical buildings from the oldest district of Belfast. North Street is where some examples are located. The buildings, which dated back to 1930, were destroyed by fire in 2004 and now graffiti can be found in their ruins. One example of pop culture art is from the artist Visual Waste, who presents well known characters, like John Snow from Game of Thrones, which is also closely linked to Belfast as it is a filming location for the HBO series.
