Within the last several decades, graffiti has become an integral part of Dresden’s youth culture. Many artists are beginning to recognize graffiti as a form of “urban art.” In the city, walls belonging to buildings – or any flat surface – are covered in colorful paint to create diverse images are diverse, ranging from animals to inspirational quotes. Those who partake in the activity are often referred to as “sprayers.” Despite this recognition, the increase in popularity has also led to legal issues. Many young artists paint buildings without permission, often causing extensive property damage. The mayor has come up with a solution to this problem by dedicating four areas of the city where graffiti is permitted. A “Legal Plain Logo” marks off these regions. Within these areas, there are no restrictions; artists are allowed to spray and paint as much as they want.
