The Wall of Love

“Le Mur des je t’aime” or “The Wall of Love,” a mural created in 2000 by the artists Fédéric Baron (a calligraphist) and Claire Kito (a mural artist), is located in the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, Paris, “The City of Love.” The 612 dark blue enameled lava tiles feature the phrase je t’aime (“I love you”) repeated 311 times in over 250 different languages. This medium, a wall, often is designed to separate people and cultures, however here it represents an image of peace and love, a place of reconciliation. Throughout history and cross-culturally, love has been defined in myriad ways. This wall, a monument dedicated to love, attempts to unite all.
