The Woollen Mill of Islay

The Isle of Islay’s first and only Woollen Mill was established in 1883, although people believe a significant portion of the machinery used previously belonged to another mill. Located in Bridgend, a small Scottish town, owners Gordon and Sheila reopened the mill in 1981. Various items are produced, including raw fabric, caps, rugs, scarves and many others. The family-run business still uses equipment and several looms dating back to Victorian times. Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including actors like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Liam Neeson have worn the mill’s spun creations. These items include the tweed suit featured in Forrest Gump and the tartans worn in Braveheart and Rob Roy. Various articles of clothing were also featured in Far and Away. Firms throughout England, Germany, France and Scotland purchase the majority of the materials created at Woollen Mill.
